BioLargo and Aquatech signed a memorandum of understanding on 4 May 2026, agreeing to combine their respective technologies into a joint offering for municipal and industrial clients seeking to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, from water supplies.

No financial terms were disclosed. The agreement is non-exclusive.

Central to the deal is BioLargo's Aqueous Electrostatic Concentrator, which captures PFAS compounds onto membrane surfaces using electrical force. It avoids producing a secondary liquid waste stream, addressing one of the more costly problems in conventional PFAS treatment. Aquatech, named Water Technology Company of the Year at the 2025 Global Water Summit in Paris, will embed BioLargo's concentration step within its broader treatment systems, spanning membrane, thermal, biological, and electrochemical processes.

"Combining BioLargo's collection capability with Aquatech's removal and destruction expertise creates a fast-track to effective solutions," said Devesh Mittal, Vice President of Aquatech Environmental Services.

Regulatory pressure is a clear driver. Binding PFAS limits under the recast EU Drinking Water Directive came into force in January 2026, pushing utilities that had previously focused on monitoring to begin procurement of treatment systems. Bluefield Research estimates total PFAS drinking water treatment spending across ten European countries will reach €3.6 billion through 2036, with Germany, Italy, France, and Spain accounting for roughly two-thirds of that figure.

Such numbers are drawing attention to integrated technology partnerships.

Tonya Chandler, President of BioLargo Equipment, said the company aimed to deliver scalable solutions for governments, municipalities, and industry by combining proven engineering with innovative science.
